My story

Rising up to the challenge

Hi and welcome to this incredible journey. My name is JF Moreau — or Jean-François Moreau for people who like a good tongue twister. Thank you for being here! I am here because my passion is to help people. I needed extra help in my life and I still do.

I was born with cerebral palsy — CP for short. It's a neurological disability that affects people in very varied ways. At birth, it took about 10 minutes for me to start breathing. Doctors and specialists wouldn't know until I was five years old what the impact of CP would be for me. I was two and a half when I spoke my first words. I finally was able to walk at five after a lot of work doing daily physiotherapy and occupational therapy. Just before kindergarten, I developed enough stability to go up and down the stairs. Teachers paired me up with a friend to hold my hands in the stairwells. They even installed a seatbelt in the bus so I would not fly off the bench!

Fine motor tasks have always been very difficult for me and sometimes seemed impossible. Writing was very difficult. In third grade, I had to learn cursive — that was torture. After a few weeks, they made an exception for me and went back to writing print, but this was still torture. After 10 minutes of writing, my tense muscles would be sore — but I persevered. Tying my shoes was impossible (I don't use this word lightly). And don't get me started on drinking a full glass of water — it can get pretty messy!

At school, I was the underdog. I was bullied and I always felt like I had to prove myself. Growing up in the 80s and 90s, I really loved the Rocky movies. The song “Eye of the Tiger” always stuck with me — “rising up to the challenge” was something I always identified with. It wasn't easy to be different, it wasn't easy to have a hard time doing what everyone else seemed to do pretty easily. For me, the tiger represents strength, courage, tenacity and resilience — all characteristics by which I do my best to live.

As I grew older, some aspects of my life got easier. I got physically stronger, which helped in my daily tasks. And as I learned how to use the power of my mind, living a life full of challenges became easier.

With the support of my family and many healthcare professionals, I persevered — developing a tenacity (some might call it stubbornness) that has allowed me to complete two university degrees, have a thriving career in technology, and be a committed father to three children. Besides my degrees in Computer Science, I have completed hypnosis, meditation, and Reiki training, allowing me to access deeper parts of my mind to reach my goals, no matter how ambitious they seem.
